Two people discussing a website project over a laptop

When you decide to get a website, one of the first questions is how to pay for it. There are two common models: pay a larger amount once and own the site, or pay a smaller amount every month for a website that is built, hosted and looked after for you. Neither is better in every case. This guide explains how each works so you can pick the one that suits your situation.

Paying outright

You agree a price for the project, pay it, and receive the finished site. Hosting, updates and any later changes are then either handled by you or arranged separately.

Good fit if:

  • You want to own the site from day one and are happy to manage hosting and updates yourself, or to pay for support only when you need it.
  • You have a clear, fixed scope: a landing page, a brochure site, a defined set of pages.
  • You prefer one predictable cost now over an ongoing commitment.

Watch out for:

  • A bigger upfront cost, which can be hard when you are also paying for everything else in a new venture.
  • Ongoing costs that are easy to forget: hosting, security updates, backups and small content changes all still need doing.

Paying monthly (Website as a Service)

You pay a flat monthly plan. The site is designed, built and launched for you, then hosted, monitored and kept up to date as part of the same fee. Our plans also include an allowance of edits each month.

Good fit if:

  • You would rather not pay a large sum upfront.
  • You do not want to think about hosting, security updates or who to call when something breaks.
  • You expect to make regular small changes, such as new offers, updated hours or fresh photos.

Watch out for:

  • Over a long period the total paid can exceed the outright price, which is the trade you make for spreading the cost and having the upkeep included.
  • Ownership. Read the terms carefully, whoever you work with. Under our own terms, ownership of the design, code and content transfers to you once your subscription has been active for the minimum term stated in your order, and you can cancel at any time with a handover period.

A simple way to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  1. Can I comfortably pay the upfront cost? If not, a monthly plan removes that barrier.
  2. Who will look after the site afterwards? If the honest answer is "nobody", a managed plan protects you from a neglected, out-of-date site.
  3. How likely is my scope to change? If your needs will keep evolving, monthly edits are often simpler than requesting a new quote each time.

If you are still unsure, that is normal. You can see both options side by side on our pricing page, or book a free consultation and we will talk through your situation with no obligation.
