"How much does a website cost?" is the most common question we hear, and the honest answer is "it depends". That is not a dodge. A five-page site for a local business and a custom booking platform are completely different pieces of work, and the price reflects that. Here are the factors that really move the number.
1. Size and number of pages
More pages mean more design, more content to place, and more to test. A single landing page is a very different job from a 25-page site with a blog and service sections.
2. Custom design vs. a starting template
A well-chosen template can get you online faster and for less. A fully custom design takes longer because everything is drawn and built around your brand. Neither is wrong; template-based is a sensible choice when you are starting out, and custom design pays off when the site is central to how you win customers.
3. Features and functionality
This is usually the biggest driver. A brochure site mostly displays information. Once you add any of the following, the work grows quickly:
- User accounts and logins
- Online payments or a shop with a basket
- Booking or scheduling
- Integrations with other tools you already use
- A dashboard or admin area
4. Content
Who writes the copy and supplies the photos? If you have everything ready, the project moves quickly. If you need help with writing or images, that is extra work, and gaps in content are one of the most common causes of delays.
5. Ongoing care
A site is not finished at launch. Hosting, security updates, backups and content changes continue afterwards. Some people handle this themselves, and some include it in a monthly plan. Make sure whichever route you choose covers it, so it does not turn into a surprise cost later.
How to keep costs sensible
- Start with what you need now. A focused first version is easier to afford, and you can add features as the business grows.
- Have your content ready. Clear text and good images save time.
- Be specific about your goals. "More enquiries" leads to a very different site from "a place to show our menu".
- Get a fixed price in writing. Avoid open-ended hourly billing for a clearly defined project.
